The Haiku Connection
One of our favorite haiku sites is the regional Alaska branch of the Haiku Society of America. The site is run by two active and very talented haiku masters, Billie Wilson and Cindy Zackowitz. This site carries a wide array of haiku, instruction, great photography and links to other poets and sites of interest. Visit the site and share the expressive poetry that is clearly stimulated by the magnificant Alaskan environment.

Modern Haiku is an attractive, artistic and sophisticated web site dedicated to serious studies about haiku: past, present and future. Their publication (quarterly) is both informative and well crafted. They seek haiku for inclusion in their publication and frank reviews of submitted published works are featured on-line and in the journal.

Many good books are available to the haiku enthusiast. Haiku is a lively, evolving art form. The books below do not represent a monolithic view.

If you seek a thorough review of the history and traditions of this ancient art, we recommend One Hundred Frogs-From Renga to Haiku in English by Hiroaki Sato. It may take a little web searching to find a copy, but worth the effort. You will especially enjoy all the translations of Basho's most famous poem.

We also recommend Writing and Enjoying Haiku, A Hands-on Guide by Jane Reichhold. This unique book explains specific techniques emerging haiku writers can use. It gives students, teachers and writers  valuable  insights into the craft which other books books on haiku fail to mention. Widely availble.

Haiku: A
Poet's Guide by Lee Gurga is a well-organized, thoughtful book with specific examples of why some haiku are more successful than others. The book discusses issues relevant to contemporary haiku (such as syllables and seasonal words) and also focuses on how a poet's work develops over time.     Available through the Modern Haiku website and through major book sellers.

There are several books which offer extensive collections of the best of English-language haiku. One is The Haiku Anthology edited and assembled by Cor van den Huevel. It is published by W. W. Norton and widely available. Another collection, edited by Bruce Ross, is The Haiku Moment.
Published by Tuttle.

Written by the widely respected William J. Higginson,  The Haiku Handbook - How to Write, Share, and Teach Haiku, still remains a valuable resouce some 20 years after its first publication. Reissued in 1992, the book is easily located.

A fresh look at haiku in a contemporary setting can be found in the Haiku Guide to the Inside Passage by Sally Stiles. This book is featured on the home page of our web site.
